About the Artist

Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.

About the Artist

Patricia K. Sommer

As a child, I loved drawing and making all manner of things.  But, sadly, I never studied art in high school. Somehow, I ended up in the journalism room instead of the art room!  I did learn a lot from Mr. Marlo, but still regret not taking the art path.

In college I majored in applied art, which was Miami University’s version of interior design;  it included design principles, but no fine art.  Another misstep.

Then came marriage and babies. As the kiddos matured and I had more time to pursue my own endeavors, I decided it was time to follow my passion, and I enrolled at the Glassell School of Art in Houston, where I studied drawing and painting. Ever since then, I’ve been making art!

Why?  Because it’s fun to explore paint interactions, playfully or with intention;  and to imagine what a blob of clay can morph into.  In addition, it helps me tune out this turbulent and nonsensical world.  When I am free to observe, imagine, and create, it feeds my soul, with nature as my guide.  Almost anything can spark a creative endeavor.  In this way, the well of my imagination never runs dry.

I work primarily in acrylics, watercolors, and clay.
