About the Artist
Patricia K. Sommer
Nature is my muse. Through realism, as well as abstraction, I am compelled to capture the exquisiteness of the natural world. From the intricacy of light falling on a verdant scene, to the simplicity of forms created by atmospheric conditions, the urge to express the elegance and drama of nature is a part of who I am. I truly love the natural world and find beauty everywhere. Creating art is a therapeutic tool for me, as it forces me to reflect and contemplate, allowing spiritual and intellectual growth.
I have lived in diverse places, from the quiet farmlands and prairies of the Midwest, to the lush, tropical Florida seaside, the sensual lowlands of Louisiana, the stunning mountains of Switzerland and Colorado, the aromatic Texas piney woods, and the undulating grasses of the Texas Gulf coast. Every one of those environments has informed and influenced my art.
I work in both two-dimensional water media, and in three-dimensional porcelain. Each offers me the opportunity to develop my vision and evolve as an artist. The transparency of watercolor allows me to achieve luminosity and convey experience; the opacity of acrylic enables me to build up layers to emphasize the forces of nature; and the smooth, pliable essence of porcelain facilitates the formation of vessels that are evocative of forms found in the natural world. Through these materials, I seek to express myself, and elicit an emotional response from the viewer.
